Mankind has been using cosmetics to enhance their appearance since several centuries. There are several offshoots of this particular 'ology; some view it as just an add on to one's outwardly appearance while others see it as an important branch of health sciences.

Noble Egyptians used lead, mercury, ash and other substances to create black eyeliner and highlighters. Deodorants were used in the form of carob pellets by priests and noblemen in Egypt. These were rubbed on the body directly.

Hierogylphics have offered a wealth of information on understanding how cosmetics were used and their benefits to the human body and mind. A few centuries later, Chinese noble families started using blends of beeswax, gum, gelatin and egg with a mix of colours on their nails. Only the noble were permitted to use the brightest colours as a status symbol.

The Roman Way

With the Romans, cosmetology advanced immensely. Oils and lotions began to be used in makeup, perfumes and cleansers for their medicinal properties. These were used in hair as well to keep it in shape.

Roman cosmetologists and cosmetic manufacturers were one of the most productive in the olden world. Around the same time, new advancements came about in hair dyes and wigs. People could now change their appearance to their satisfaction and almost instantly. Generals and old senators were a fan of these wigs.
