As it is, a sequel of a remake is not a very good idea. And if the scriptwriters are the greatest proponents of minimal writing, you know you are nearing a dead end. Post the release of Don 2, the wise and well meaning hit duo of Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani should know better.

Banking on rehashed dialogues is a tradition at Bollywood. But any bank will tell you there’s a limit to how much you can encash. Farhan had already over squeezed the terrific Bachchan line “Don ko pakadnaa mushkil hi nahi...” in the first remake. Now, if he still expected the tattered lemon to ooze some more juice, his mission was impossible anyways. Even the most ardent of SRK fans would miss a story in Don 2 amidst the exotic visual treat across Asia Pacific and Europe, grand car chases, thrilling bike escapades and all the mindless razzmatazz.
The most comic element of the plot is the Interpol - run by a hapless Detective Mallik (Om Puri) supported by a shapely officer Roma (Priyanka Chopra). At best, Mallik can pass off as a retiring executive of an Indian PSU but here, we have him in starched uniform, worrying more for Roma’s well being than anything else. His supposed regret in life is the inability to get Don behind bars but his facial expression suggests he’s not happy with his VRS package. Officer Roma, on the other hand, would leave all aside for a dance with Hrithik Roshan (who plays a queer guest appearance as one of Don’s many faces)
Now if a team like that is at the helm of Operation “Pakdo Don”, you know Don has nothing to worry about. And in exchange of the ‘Visit Berlin’ promotion, Farhan has the entire Germany on Don’s side. So, a troop of choicest dumb bank officials and security men run helter skelter as Don seize the priceless currency plates of a premier German bank that look like magnified cellphone batteries. Even the security officers of a low-rung co-operative bank from India would have offered better resistance.
With SRK stamped all over the place, other players have little room to play. Of the whole lot, only Bomman Irani leaves an impression. Aly Khan and Kunal Kapoor are thoroughly wasted in trivial roles. Lara Dutta is the only net gainer who gets a fresh lease of screen life, playing Don’s trusted aide and woman Friday. The music is average. Shankar Ehsaan Loy had much better scores for the original remake. The ‘Don Don’ din must have left them fatigued.
Hope Farhan doesn’t have a Don 3 in mind. If he has, the audience should give it a miss as Saridon is not recommended for a recurring headache.
