Incorporated in Dec.'79 as Ajanta Pharma Private Ltd and later became a Public Limited Company under the name Ajanta Pharma (APL), and received certificate in Aug.'86. The company is engaged in manufacturing and marketing of pharmaceuticals products both in India and abroad.
During 1979 to 1984, the company became one of the major OTC player in the state of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat. With the success in the OTC segment, the research & development activity of the company then started focusing on new formulation developments where it tried to blend the ancient ayurveda with the modern medicine for the benefit of the society.
The company entered in the bulk drug segment as a backward integration in 1998 with semi synthetic penicillin and then switched over to cefalosporins.
In Feb.'00, the company has sold its bulk drug plant to M/s Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals for a consideration of Rs 21 cr. This has enabled the company to concentrate on its core activity of formulations.
It came with a public issue in Mar.'00 for three major products of R&D, Formulation plant and Herbal Extraction plant.
Consequent to IPO, the total Equity paid up had risen by Rs.3.05 crores,taking the total paid up into Rs.11.80 crores.
The company has gone for expansion in the year 2002 to meet the market demand.It has increased the Installed Capacity of Capsules by 15 crores(nos) and subsequently the total capacity has been risen to 30 crores(nos).
The company has also increased the installed capacity of Liquids by 800 Kilo Litres and taking the total capacity to 2000 Kilo Litres.APL has also increased the installed capacity of Powder by 460 MT and this has caused the hike in the total capacity which is 1500 MT.
