Hindustan Powerplus(HPL), incorporated in Oct 1988 and was promoted by C K Birla Group Companies i.e. Hindustan Motors, Hyderabad Inds., Central India Industries, Rajasthan Industries, Universal Trading & National Bearing Company in technical and financial collaboration with Caterpillar of USA to manufacture and market heavy-duty internal combustion diesel engines and gensets. The foreign collaborator currently holds 37.74% of the stake in HPL.
HPL's manufacturing facility at Mathagondapalli near Hosur, TN has commenced operations in January 1989. This plant has an installed capacity to manufacture 2800 units of ICD engines and 250 nos. of Gensets. The company's products i.e diesel engines and gensets are marketed under the brand name 'Caterpillar'. The aftersale parts are sold under the brand names of caerpillar and Intac.
HPL came out with one issues each of puplic and rights in July 1990 and 1996-97 respectively. The rights issue is made to part finance its expansion project.
Caterpillar tookover the management of HPL in 1993. The company plans to introduce the Caterpillar 3500 engine series with a kVA of upto 1900. In 1995-96, the company was awarded the prestigious ISO 9001 certificate for its products by Det Norske Vertia, a leading international certification body.
During the year 1999-2000, the company commenced sales of its factory-packaged gensets under the brand name "Caterpiller". The company has also tested the in-house developed Generating sets which will reduce the vibration and noise level of the sets.
