Promoted by T R Varadarajan, Indiana Dairy Specialities (IDSL) was incorporated on 18 May'89, as a private limited company and later converted into a public limited one. The company set up a plant at Bangalore in 1989 to manufacture ice-creams for Cadbury India. Later, it acquired two manufacturing units, one at Hyderabad, manufacturing ice-creams for Dollops (which was also transferred to the company) and the second at Nagpur, manufacturing sterilised flavoured milk (SFM) ice-creams sold under its own brand name, Indiana.
The company's operations have shown tremendous all-round improvement. Its casein (a dairy protein) exported to Australia has been certified as excellent by its collaborators. IDSL has also entered into a joint venture with a Nepal-based company to set up a plant at Bhaktapur for Indiana ice-creams and sterilised flavoured milk. A sales parlour in Kathmandu was opened in collaboration with Bhaktapur Dairy, Bhaktapur.
The company has signed a MoU for a joint venture with Coastlog Industries, US, to produce and market the Citrus Valley range of fruit beverages and the Emerald Farm range of dairy beverages. MoUs have been entered into with Zubair Enterprises in Muscat and Oman, to set up composite dairy plants in these countries.
In Hyderabad, IDSL commissioned a composite dairy plant to handle liquid packed milk and milk products, sugar cones and wafer cups in a joint venture with Monte Bianco, Italy, a world leader in this field.
