India Infoline News Service / 12:02 , Nov 24, 2009

Jaiprakash Associates, a company under the Jaiprakash Group, bagged this project from the UP Govt. under tariff-based bidding

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has secured a major order for setting up the upcoming 1,980 MW Prayagraj Thermal Power Project (TPP) with Supercritical parameters in Uttar Pradesh, involving three units of 660 MW each.

Valued at Rs56bn, the order for the greenfield power project, located at Bara in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh, has been placed on BHEL by Prayagraj Power Generation Co. Limited (PPGCL), a company owned by Jaiprakash Associates Limited (JAL).

JAL, a company under the Jaiprakash Group, bagged this project from the UP Govt. under tariff-based bidding and PPGCL, the company formed by the UP Govt. for the purpose was subsequently acquired by JAL.

The order is testimony to the confidence reposed by Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in BHEL’s capabilities. It also reinforces BHEL’s leadership status in the execution of thermal power projects involving supply of state-of-the-art equipment, suited to Indian coal and Indian conditions.

BHEL’s scope of work in the present contract envisages design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of Steam Turbines, Generators and Boilers, along with associated Auxiliaries, besides state-of-the-art Controls & Instrumentation (C&I).

BHEL has upgraded its technology base from sub-critical sets to supercritical sets of 660/800MW and above. The company has ongoing collaboration agreements with Alstom, France and Siemens, Germany, with a technology transfer arrangement. This will enable the country to be self-reliant in the field of supercritical thermal power plants.
