BPCL, Videocon jump as Anadarko reports another gas strike offshore Mozambique

Capital Market / 13:32 , Jan 17, 2012

BPCL and Videocon Industries rose 2.73% and 3.04% respectively at 13:35 IST on BSE after US oil and gas company Anadarko Petroleum said it had made another gas strike offshore Mozambique, adding the well was its best so far in the region.

Videocon Industries (up 3.04%) and BPCL (up 2.73%), edged higher.

The BSE Sensex was up 288.88 points or 1.78% at 16,478.24.

Anadarko said the Lagosta-2 appraisal well, 7 kilometeres north of the Lagosta discovery, encountered a total of 777 net feet of natural gas pay in multiple zones.

This is the largest pay count of any well in the complex to date, said Bob Daniels, Anadarko Sr. Vice President, Worldwide Exploration. The results continue to support Anadarko's recoverable resource estimates of 15 to 30-plus trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the discovery area on its block, he added.

The Lagosta exploration well has been drilled to a total depth of 14,223 feet in water depths of 4,813 feet, Anadarko said.

BPRL Ventures Mozambique R.V, an indirect unit of BPCL and Videocon Mozambique Rovuma 1, an overseas unit of Videocon Hydrocarbon Holdings, hold 10% participating interest (PI) each in the block in partnership with Anadarko Petroleum Mozambique Area 1 Lda, an affiliate of Anadarko, who is also the operator of the 2.6-million-acre block with a PI of 36.5%.

Other partners in the area include, Mitsui E&P Mozambique Area 1 (20%) and Cove Energy Mozambique Rovuma Offshore (8.5%). Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos, E.P. a national oil company of Mozambique, hold the remaining 15% interest and is carried through the exploration phase.

State-run oil marketing company, BPCL, reported a net loss of Rs 3229.27 crore in Q2 September 2011 compared with a net profit of Rs 2142.22 crore in Q2 September 2010. Net sales increased 19.4% to Rs 42281.90 crore in Q2 September 2011 over Q2 September 2010.

Videocon Industries' net profit fell 27% to Rs 116.82 crore on 11.8% increase in net sales to Rs 3338.93 crore in Q3 September 2011 over Q3 September 2010.

Videocon is a well known brand in the consumer electronics and home appliances category offering a full range of products in televisions, washing machines, air-conditioners, refrigerators, audio products, home theatre systems and microwave ovens. The company also has an oil and gas business in the exploration and extraction areas.
