Glenmark Pharma inches ahead on US nod for a generic drug

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals gained 0.56% to Rs 244.10 at 12:17 IST on BSE, after Glenmark Generics, a subsidiary of the company, received nod from the US drug regulator for a generic drug.

Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex was down 36.91 points, or 0.21% to 17,453.17.

On BSE, 88,705 shares were traded in the counter as against an average daily volume of 2.38 lakh shares in the past one quarter.

The stock hit a high of Rs 247 and a low of Rs 243.50 so far during the day. The stock had hit a 52-week high of Rs 290 on 6 January 2010 and a 52-week low of Rs 134.05 on 17 March 2009.

The mid-cap stock had underperformed the market over the past one month till 17 March 2010, falling 4.79% as compared to the Sensex's 6.46% rise. It had also underperformed the market in the past one quarter, declining 7.29% as compared to the Sensex's return of 3.53%.

The company's equity capital is Rs 26.98 crore. Face value per share is Rs 1.

The current price of Rs 244.10 discounts the company's Q3 December 2009 annualized EPS of Rs 5.56, by a PE multiple of 43.90.

Glenmark Generics has received final approval from US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) for Mexipril Hydrochloride/ Hydrochlorothiazide tablets in multiple strengths. The drug is the generic version of Schwarz Pharma's Uniretic tablets and used for treating hypertension.

Early this month, Glenmark Pharma got final approval from US FDA for Ropinirole Hydrochloride tablets in multiple strengths. Ropinirole Hydrochloride tablet is the generic version of GlaxoSmithKline's Requip tablets. The drug is used for treating signs and symptoms of idiopathic parkinson's disease. The annual sale of the drug in the US is about $500 million.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals' net profit rose 1.5% to Rs 37.49 crore on 13.3% increase in net sales to Rs 276.92 crore in Q3 December 2009 over Q3 December 2008.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals manufactures and markets pharmaceutical ingredients. Currently, the company has 11 drug compounds at various stages of research development for treatment of diseases such as inflammation, heart ailments, metabolic disorders and cancer.
