India's GSM operators add 6.5mn new subscribers in April

Vodafone added 0.81mn customers, taking its subscriber base to 151.28mn. It had a market share of 22.56%.

India's GSM telecom service providers added 6.5mn new subscribers in April 2012, taking the total user base to 670.57mn, according to the data released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). The GSM subscriber base was 664.08mn in March.


Bharti Airtel added 2.01mn users, highest in April, taking its total subscriber base to 183.29mn. It had a market share of 27.33% by April-end. Idea Cellular, with 17.03% market share, added 1.48mn new subscribers, taking its subscriber base to 114.20mn.


Vodafone added 0.81mn customers, taking its subscriber base to 151.28mn. It had a market share of 22.56%. 


Uninor added 1.12mn new customers in April, taking its user base to 43.55mn by the end of April. Aircel added 1.01mn new users to take its base to 63.58mn. Videocon added 0.15mn new users, taking its total base to 6.10mn. 


S Tel and Etisalat DB did not saw any new user additions. Both these companies have already announced closure of services in India and are now helping their current subscribers move to other operators through MNP.


BSNL did not see any additions during the month while MTNL lost 0.1mn customers. The subscriber base of BSNL and MTNL stood at 94.67mn and 5.48mn, respectively.


Sistema Shyam TeleServices (SSTL), which operates under the MTS brand, added 0.20mn customers in April, taking its total customer base to 16.05mn.
