Mamta Shah: The entrepreneur who puts kids on fast track to learning

India Infoline News Service / 15:34 , Oct 25, 2010

All of 2 and a half years old, Aditya was such a hyperactive child, that his parents were at their wits’ end looking for ways to calm him down

6-year old Aagam was so shy that he just couldn’t speak without hesitating and pausing after every word. But six-months after he joined the special programme at FasTracKids, both Aagam and his mother were surprised at the confidence with which he read loudly to his class.

All of 2 and a half years old, Aditya was such a hyperactive child, that his parents were at their wits’ end looking for ways to calm him down. At the FasTrac Tots and Music programme, Aditya’s excessive energy was channelised into music, which he enjoyed thoroughly. By the end of the programme, he was not only much calmer, but his attention span had also increased considerably.

8-year-old Rahil’s mother was quite worried noticed that he couldn’t write well, she was quite worried. However, a few months after joining the Fastrac Core programme, not only did he improve his writing, but he also got interested in reading the encyclopedia, which he never touched earlier!

As a young mother of two, what always irked Mamta Shah was the lack of imagination and creativity in our system of education. But instead of cribbing about it and sulking, the young entrepreneur with a Buisiness Management degree decided to set things right herself. And within a short span of time, the smart go-getter has brought cheer to Mumbai’s little hearts in the form of FasTracKids, the internationally recognised teaching centre specialising in the enrichment and development of a child.

A USA-based group, FasTracKids International focuses on allowing children to learn through discovery and exploration. “I’ve always felt the need for using creative ways to increase children’s interest in education. Activities that combine fun and interactivity always attract children.

Apart from their learning skills, such activities also improve their confidence, concentration and communication skills,” Mamta says, explaining the philosophy behind her FasTracKids centre, which she has set up in Mumbai’s Santacruz.

Apart from creating a love of learning in children between 6 months and 8 years old, the programmes at FasTracKids also develop creativity, communication, critical thinking abilities and collaboration skills among children. The strength of the programmes at Mamta’s FasTracKids centre lies in their ability to engage a child holistically. “A fun-filled, creative environment is created which engages all senses. We use materials to capture children’s imagination and hold their attention,” Mamta says.

The programmes vary according the age-group of the children. FasTrac Music, which is for 2 to 4 year-olds, uses techniques like story-telling and imaginative play with the help of music. This programme is designed to engage the child creatively through music. The children’s engagement in the music program, Mamta explains, improves their memory, cognitive development, learning skills and their ability to express emotion.

FasTracKids stimulates a child’s brain through creative teaching methods. It teaches 5 - 8 years old to use creativity, communication, critical thinking and collaboration skills through fun-filled activities using interactive platforms. The programme is a fusion of conventional subjects like biology, literature, economics and mathematics and new subjects like communication, creativity and speech, drama and art. In a unique format, the subjects are changed every 2 to 2 1/ 2 minutes, technique which requires a deft designing of the programme. Surprisingly, this method apparently increases the child’s attention span, Mamta reveals.

The programme for 3-5 year old children, called FasTrack Tots, focuses on increasing their confidence during the transition from pre-school to primary. The activities in this programme centre around developing the children’s curiosity, communication and social skills, concentration and self esteem.

Besides her regular programs, Mamta also runs vacation camps for the children who want to learn these special skills in a short time. For two to three hours a day, the camps can be offered as a one week or one day program. Just like the regular programmes, the schedule for the camps also varies according to the age group.

“The main focus of all these programmes is to let the child actively participate in its own unique learning process by using innovative techniques. And since the process is full of fun, the child develops a love for learning, which is carried through the entire life,” points out the dynamic entrepreneur.
