Parliament stalled again over price rise issue

India Infoline News Service / 12:43 , Jul 29, 2010

The opposition parties, led by the BJP-led NDA, have demanded a discussion on the issue in parliament and have said that the protests will continue unabated till their demands are met.

The parliament proceedings have been paralysed once again today as opposition parties closed ranks to attack the Government on the sensitive issue of spiraling prices. Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned till noon.

The opposition parties, led by the BJP-led NDA, have demanded a discussion on the issue in parliament and have said that the protests will continue unabated till their demands are met.

CPM politburo member Sitaram Yechury went to the extent of seeking voting on the issue of price rise. "The Centre has failed to take concrete steps to improve the situation," he was quoted as saying.

"The spiraling prices of essential commodities are the foremost issue which concerns the common man today," said BJP's Sushma Swaraj.

MPs belonging to the Samajwadi Party staged a protest outside the Parliament, while their Left counterparts staged a sit-in inside the Lower House over the burning issue.

BJP has given a notice to the Speakers of the two Houses seeking a debate over the matter. The saffron party has also planned a nation-wide protest against the UPA government's failure to arrest the price rise.
