State Bank of India celebrated 57th anniversary of its foundation with much fanfare and gaiety in a glittering function held on Saturday, the 30th of June 2012 at National Centre for Performing Arts, Mumbai.
The event was attended by its Chairman Shri Pratip Chaudhuri, Dr. Subir Gokarn , Dy .Governor , RBI, Bank's Managing Directors Shri Hemant Contractor and Shri A. Krishnakumar, other Central Board Directors, past Chairmen of the Bank, executives of Public / Private Sector Banks, eminent business persons and staff members along with their families.
Chaudhuri, Chairman in his inaugural speech recorded the long tradition of the Bank culminating in setting up of State Bank of India on 1st July 1955, the Anniversary of which is celebrated every year as State Bank Day. The Chairman added that while the bank had registered a record net profit of Rs. 11707 crores during the year 2011-12, it was equally alive to its social responsibilities. He reiterated Banks commitment to serve the society with an announcement of installing 1, 40,000 fans in 14000 schools by its 14000 branches on the State Bank Day. He appealed to staff to continue to work towards taking the Bank to the table of top banks in the world.
On the occasion, the Bank also launched for its SME and business customers, State Bank Business Debit card, having an array of attractive features including Cash Deposit facility, option of setting up Point of Sale terminals etc.
The high point of the evening was felicitation of personalities of national eminence for achievement in their respective fields. Padmashri Tessy Thomas, the lady behind India's ICBM project and more popularly known as the missile woman or Agniputri, Padmashri M.C. Mary Kom, the world renowned boxer and India’s sole woman representative in boxing in the coming Summer Olympics, Magsaysay Award winners Dr. Prakash & Dr. Mandakini Amte, eminent social workers along with Shri V.N. Deshpande, an SME customer of the bank from Kolhapur employing more than 2000 people were felicitated. The Bank contributed Rs 10 lacs each towards preferred charity of these individuals. In addition, the Bank donated an ambulance to Dr. Amte’s trust.
The gala evening ended with a spectacular cultural programme featuring star performance by renowned vocalist Padmashri Shubha Mudgal and her troupe who enthralled the audience with her captivating music, followed by standup Comedy by Prashant Rao.
