Sony Corp is planning to slash about 1,000 jobs at its former Sony Ericsson joint venture -- now fully owned -- as it seeks to cut costs at the smartphone market, according to reports.
Reports stated that the cut, which would represent about 15% of the Sony Ericsson workforce, comes on the heels of Sony's buyout of the JV from former partner Telefon AB L.M.
Sony's global smartphone market share came to about 4% in the first quarter of this year, report says.
Sony also reported that it expects the smartphone sector as a pillar of its turnaround plan under new Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai.
