Sterlite Industries extends declines on weak Q3 outcome

Sterlite Industries (India) fell 1.25% to Rs 106.45 at 10:12 IST on BSE, extending Monday's 5.36% fall after the company reported weak Q3 December 2011 results at the fag end of the trading session that day.

Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex was up 32.44 points, or 0.19%, to 16,784.17.

On BSE, 4.23 lakh shares were traded in the counter compared with average volume of 15.28 lakh shares over the past two weeks.

The stock hit a high of Rs 107.70 and a low of Rs 105.10 so far during the day.

The result was announced at the fag end of the trading session on Monday, 23 January 2012, when the stock fell 5.36% to Rs 107.80 on BSE. The stock is down 7.60% in two sessions from Rs 113.90 on Friday, 20 January 2012.

Sterlite Industries (India)'s consolidated net profit fell 17.03% to Rs 913.52 crore on 23.96% increase in total income to Rs 10921.11 crore in Q3 December 2011 over Q3 December 2010. Consequent to acquisition of zinc business at Namibia, South Africa and Ireland in the second half of the year ended March 2011, the results for the quarter ended 31 December 2011 are not strictly comparable with corresponding previous periods.

The company said due to depreciation of Indian Rupee, the net impact of foreign currency exchange fluctuations during the quarter resulted in a loss of Rs 425.39 crore.

As at 31 December 2011, on consolidated basis, the company had cash and cash equivalents of Rs 21546 crore, out of which Rs 13683 crore was primarily invested in debt mutual funds and Rs 7863 crore was in bank fixed deposits and current account balance with banks.
