The Dayawati Modi Foundation awarded the noted painter, Paresh Maity, with the prestigious ‘Dayawati Modi Award for Art, Culture and Education’ for the year 2012. The award comprising a cash prize of Rs. 2.51 lakhs, a silver shield and scroll of honour was presented to the distinguished artist of brush to mark the 97th birth anniversary of Late Smt. Dayawati Modi.
Dr. Karan Singh, Member of Parliament and President, Indian Council of Cultural Relations felicitated Maity with the award at an event held in the capital at Sri Sathya Sai Auditorium, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.
Dr. Singh on this occasion commented, “I appreciate that Dayawati Modi Foundation for Art, Culture and Education, like every year, is presenting the annual Award this year to Mr. Paresh Maity for his immense contributions towards Indian art and culture.”
Thanking the Foundation for having chosen him for the award, the noted painter said, “I am honored and humbled to be a part of glorious list of awardees. This recognition will motivate me to experiment further with colours and canvas.”
With over 60 solo shows in different parts of the globe and India, including London, New York, Singapore, Germany, Hungary, Paris and Russia, Maity is known for his signature strokes that bold and graphic often marked with a strong colour and unusual cropping. In his early years, he worked in watercolours capturing different locations. His works range from landscapes to representations of the human form.
Before this award, Maity has been felicitated by various national and international institutions, including the Royal Watercolour Society, London in 2002, All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society and British Council among others. Mr. Maity is also a recipient of several awards, including a gold medal from the former USSR, Special Recognition Award from Government of West Bengal, Jamini Roy Birth Centenary Celebration Award, Governor’s Gold Medal the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, National Scholarship Award of Government of India, Birla Academy of Art and Culture Award, Pt. Ravishankar Award from College of Art, New Delhi, Indo American Society Award, Harmony Award, Mumbai and many others.
The noted painter joins the impressive list of previous awardees, which includes names like His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Amitabh Bachchan, late Mother Teresa, late Jagjit Singh, Pandit Jasraj, Asha Bhonsle, Pandit Ravi Shankar, late Tyeb Mehta, Dr. Abdul Waheed Khan, Prof Lokesh Chandra and Dr. Karan Singh himself.
