|
June 13, 2002 Cement Sector Update - March 2002 Cement Production Increases During the fiscal year 2001-02, the performance of the cement sector has been particularly impressive as production registered a 9.7% growth to 102.4mn ton as against 0.7% drop recorded in 2000-01. For the first time in the history of the cement industry in India, the monthly cement production crossed 10mn ton while annual production crossed the 100mn ton mark during March this year. During March 02,cement production increased by 11.6% to 10.3mn ton as compared to 9.3mn ton during March01.
Source : CMA Consumption increased too . Cement consumption also reflects higher growth of 9.2% at 98.29mn ton during 2001-02 as against a 2% drop recorded in 2000-01. The consumption growth accelerated particularly from December 2001. The average growth during the last four months of fiscal year was around 17% as compared to 6% growth during the first 8 months of the year. The demand has increased from the rural areas due to the recovery of the agricultural sector, reconstruction activities in Gujarat following the 2001 earthquake and improvement in infrastructure (like construction of roads, houses, etc).
Source : CMA But depression in prices Since the rise in demand was more than compensated by the increase in production, the prices remained under check. The cement prices are expected to pick up only after the monsoon ends. The depressed prices are result of the capacity addition that has taken place during the last one year. The industry has added 14mn ton during the last fiscal. The cement companies are trying to push despatches before the monsoon, resulting in prices to remain depressed
