| Caustic soda | ||
|
Introduction Caustic soda and chlorine are co-products, which are generated in the ratio of 1:0.88. This combination is called an electrochemical unit (ECU). Caustic soda is produced by electrolysis of salt. Power and salt form the key inputs. Caustic soda is generated in liquid form. It is then dried to obtain solid form. Uses of chlorine are completely different from uses of caustic soda, thus user industries of these two commodities differ in a major way. This creates a problem for the producers in marketing these commodities. Paper & pulp industry is the largest single user sector of caustic soda in India. Caustic soda is used in the preparation of pulp. Consumption varies from unit to unit depending upon the kind of raw material used, recovery of caustic soda and size of the plant. In manmade fiber industry, caustic soda is used in the manufacturing of viscose solution from which viscose staple fibers are prepared. In the manufacturing of soap, it is used for saponification of oils. Oil, which is a glyceride of fatty acids reacts with caustic soda and gives sodium salt of fatty acids (termed as soap) and glycerol. Apart from these industries it is also used other industries such as chemical, water treatment, etc.
