Ethyl acetate This is a clear, volatile, inflammable liquid with a characteristic fruity odour. This is produced by the estherfication of acetic acid and ethyl alcohol in the presence of catalysts. Markets It is used for the manufacture of printing inks and flexible packaging. Ethyl acetate is widely used in the formulation of adhesives and lacquers. it is also used as solvent in paints. This contributes to at least 10% of the total demand. It is also used as a varnish and as a flavoring agent. Pharmaceuticals constitute 35% of the total demand. This is used in the manufacture of amoxylcillin and sulpha drugs. It also acts as a solvent for resins due to low toxicity and solubility. It is also used as a solvent for nitrates in artificial and patent leathers, inks, photographic films and linoleum. Solvent systems using ethyl acetate are used as glazing agents in candies, and as a flavoring agent and in perfumes. It is also used as a co-extractant of camphor, fats, oils, and antibiotics. Currently demand is expected to be around 35,000 ton. The demand is expected to grow at 8-10% per annum, as demand for ethyl acetate grows in the flexible packaging sector and pharmaceuticals sector. it will show a growth rate in the range of 5-6%. Excessive capacities have resulted in the crashing of the prices.
