Organic Chemicals Update - February 2001

Prices:

In December 2000 the International prices of naphtha declined by US$9 to US$ 277-279. On the same lines, domestic prices of naphtha declined by Rs1000/ton to Rs13950/ton.

In December 2000, International prices of Ethylene declined by US$13 to US$ 420-430. Domestic prices of naphtha declined by Rs6300/ton to Rs31, 500/ton.

The international prices of propylene declined by US$20/ton to US$370-380/ton while domestic prices of propylene increased by Rs6, 000/ton to Rs36, 000/ton.

Domestic methanol producers have increased the prices of Methanol by 15% in February 2001.The main reasons for price hike are the rising demand in domestic market along with relative non-availability in the International market.

Production:

During April –November 2000 production of methanol declined by 4.9%yoy & that of phenol declined by 9.6%yoy. Anti dumping duty of RsUS$4.31/kg was imposed on tri-methoxy benzadehyde imported from China.

Provisional anti dumping duty of US$0.342/kg was imposed by Ministry of Finance on all imports of aniline from European Union. The petition seeking imposition of anti –dumping duty was filed by Hindustan Organic Chemicals, Narmada Chematur Petrochemicals & Anirox

News:

The two competitors Deepak Nitrate & Dharamsi Morarjee Chemical Company have agreed to split the production processes for the manufacture of Resorcinol in face of falling import duties & resultant cheap imports.

Resorcinol is a high value additive used in the manufacture of tyres. Dharamsi Morarjee Chemical Company having the capacity to manufacture sulphuric acid will be involved in the first stage of production & pass on the product to Deepak Nitrate for manufacture of the final product. Both companies will share the final product on the basis of current production status.
