Polymers Sector Update - March 2001

HDPE:

In January 2001 international prices of HDPE injection moulding grade and blow moulding grade increased by US$22/ton to US$605-615/ton and US$625-635/ton respectively. Prices of imported HDPE (CIF-India) were at US$620-630/ton. Margins of stand alone producers increased by 13% to US$207/ton while the margins of integrated HDPE producers also increased by 14% to US$300/ton. In the domestic market the manufacturers maintained the general prices as of December 2000 at Rs46, 300 per ton.

Production of HDPE declined by 16.8%yoy to 27841tons in December 2000.The cumulative production of HDPE during April-December 2000 declined by 19.9%yoy to 248,000 tons.

LDPE:

In January 2001 international prices of LDPE decreased by US$28/ton to US$685-695/ton and the margins of LDPE producers increased by 15% to US$244/ton. In the domestic market, IPCL (sole manufacturer of LDPE) increased prices by Rs2000/ton to Rs49200/ton.

Production of LDPE declined by 7.3%yoy to 24180 tons in December 2000. Cumulative production of LDPE during April-December 2000 increased by 2.2% to 240,000 tons.

PVC

International prices increased by US$10/ton to US$570-580/ton in January 2001.Prices of imported PCV material (CIF India) were at US$ 55-560/ton. Margins of PVC producers increased by 4% to US$281/ton. In the domestic market IPCL maintained prices at December levels of Rs45936/ton.

Production of PVC during December 2000 was at 29020 tons, a decline of 6.1%yoy over the December 99. It recorded an increase of 9.1% in production during the period April-December 2000 at 612,000 tons.

Polystyerene (PS)

In January 2001 international prices of general-purpose polystrene (GPPS) and high Impact polystrene (HIPS) declined by US$15/ton to US$685-695/ton and US$735-745/ton respectively.

Domestic prices of GPPS and HIPS were at Rs47200-53000/ton and Rs59000-64000/ton respectively.

Polyproplylene (PP)

In January 2001, international prices of PPHP increased by US$10/ton to US$550-570/ton. The prices of PPCP decreased byUS$27/ton to US$610-620/ton. Margins of PP producers increased by 1% to US$162/ton.

In the domestic market the manufacturers (IPCL) maintained the prices at December levels of Rs42750/ton.
