Markets Soaps And Detergents Industry This sector consumes 50% of the total production. It is used as a filler in the production of soaps and detergents, however it can also be used as an active ingredient. The norms for using soda ash are as follows Low price detergents use 20-25% of soda ash (by weight), while premium detergents consume 30-32% (by weight) of soda ash. High priced detergents use 250 kg of soda ash per ton of detergents while low priced detergents use 400 kg of soda ash per ton. The initial growth in this sector has been high mainly due to the ban on the usage of Tallow - meat fat used for the production of soaps. The soda ash market is likely to see a major change after Nirma Industries commissions its 420,000 tpa production facility. In this sector the substitution threat hovers, as soda ash can be easily replaced with salt without any change in the perceived quality. Glass Industry This sector has seen a slow growth in our country. The raw material for manufacture of glass is soda ash, sand & cullet, dolomite, feldspar, power and fuel. Soda ash constitutes nearly 70% of the total raw material costs. The consumption of soda ash in the various categories are as follows-
Sodium Silicates Soda ash is also used to produce sodium silicates. Major end users are silica-based catalysts, silica gels and laundry soaps. They are also used in the manufacture of adhesives, metal cleaning water and pigments. Chemical Industry Soda Ash also finds its usage in the chemical sector especially in the manufacturing of sodium carbonate monohydrate, sodium aluminate, sodium bichromate and sodium tripolyphosphate. Dyestuffs Its is also used in the manufacture of dyestuff namely vinyl sulphone dyes and Hacid, these contribute nearly 6% of the total demand. Soda Ash suffers from substitution threat in this sector as soda ash works as a weak alkali. Rising soda ash prices are due to high costs and continued investments in plants due to environmental issues. Soda Ash Production And Consumption Profile (ton)
