States of shock

India Infoline News Service | Mumbai |

Take the most talked about state in India - Gujarat as a country then the nearest equivalent of the country in population terms would be Italy. If you take the GDP Equivalent then SURPRISE!! SURPRISE!! it will be closer to Angola. If you take per capita GDP then Gujarat will look like Congo.

I am a great fan of The Economist but one of their recent articles depressed me. All those who think and loudly shout that India is shining and believe strongly that India is the next Super Power should check out this link. http://www.economist.com/content/indian-summary . People often talk about India and Europe in the same breath. Unfortunately, if you use the parameters shown in the Economist article, we look more like a mortally wounded combination of Africa and Eastern Europe in most parameters, except of course, population.

The reality is quite shocking. People from all walks of life enjoy talking about India shining. The powers that be or remain need to really get their act together. The structure of our nation is such that we need divine intervention to make sure that we don’t fall into an abyss like Africa and remain (perpetually!) emerging.

The world is fundamentally in a state of becoming but what is becoming of our states in India?  The Economist has a redrawn map of India, in more ways than one. I disagree with the map because it is a clearly wrong pictorial political representation of India. In the article, they have tried to answer people who like to compare India with Europe. They have compared the states of India to the nearest country equivalent based on three parameters be countries and found their equivalent country taking into account three parameters viz. Population, GDP and per capita GDP. India looks more like Africa and Eastern Europe, with names like Nambia, Kenya, Congo, Sudan and certain other countries whose names I haven’t yet heard of.

Let’s move to my favourite state Bihar; in terms of population Bihar would look like Philippines. In terms of per capita GDP it will look like Eritrea and if you look at GDP then it is closer to Uzbekistan. In terms of GDP, believe it or not the state of Maharashtra will have a GDP equivalent of Singapore, which is in terms of size , like Mumbai.

Papua New Guinea’s per capita is the same as God’s Own Country - Kerala. In terms of GDP, Reddy’s beware, Andhra Pradesh will look like Slovakia, and Madhya Pradesh will look like Guatemala.

Only when you look at the population parameters, Brazil is equivalent to Uttar Pradesh and Mexico is equivalent to Maharashtra. We have got one parameter right, but if we don’t in health and education, demographic dividend might soon become a curse.

Now if this is not a wakeup call then I don’t know what is. I am still in a state of Shock!
