Mutual Funds Analysis
In the last few months, Indian mutual funds have been very much in the news. Some mutual funds had to postpone redemption of fixed maturity plans (FMPs) due to defaults by bond issuers while other debt funds have taken huge hits on their NAV as bonds issued by NBFCs have been downgraded to default status. In this melee, it is the mutual fund investor who has borne the brunt. This is important because over the last five years investors have understood the benefits of investing in mutual funds and have put their trust in fund managers like never before. The AUM of Indian mutual funds grew from Rs8 trillion to Rs25 trillion in last five years. As of March 31, 2019, the number of mutual fund folios crossed the 8 crore mark while the average monthly SIP collections are ~Rs8,000cr over the last one year (SIP collection for FY19 is Rs92,693cr). Finally, mutual funds as an investment option have arrived in India. Here are some top mutual funds (regular plans) to invest in 2019.

1. Multi-Cap funds for long term growth

These funds should remain the key to your long term wealth portfolio. They combine the beta of large caps with the alpha potential of mid caps. Above all you have diversification across sectors and capitalization. With the government focus on small businesses, the midcap and smallcap sector could finally get some breathing space. Here are our top 3 performers.
Fund Name 1-year returns (%) 3-year returns (%) 5-year returns (%)
Kotak Standard Multi-cap (G) 9.875 16.696 16.509
HDFC Equity Growth (G) 12.237 15.408 10.751
Canara Robeco Div (G) 8.256 15.157 10.744
Data Source: Morningstar

Multi cap funds are best fits for the long term time frame of over 8 years.

2. ELSS funds for tax saving

ELSS funds have already emerged as a great on-boarding process into equities. The effective yields are much higher than normal equity funds due to the tax benefit under Section 80C available. The mandatory 3 year lock-in encourages a longer term view in the fund. ELSS fund returns are largely driven by the tax shield, and hence, must be looked at purely from that perspective. Here are our top 3 performers.
Fund Name 1-year returns (%) 3-year returns (%) 5-year returns (%)
Quant Tax Plan (G) 3.289 11.788 16.638
Axis Long Term Equity (G) 3.781 13.811 15.320
Birla Tax Relief (G) -2.299 12.198 14.569
Data Source: Morningstar

Effective post tax shield returns will be much higher depending on your income slab.

3. Low duration funds to tide over the debt markets

Debt markets have been under a cloud and that is largely due to the pressure faced by the credit opportunities funds. Also with the uncertainty over interest rates and the volatility at the long end, low duration funds may be the place to park your stable money. Here are our top 3 performers.
Fund Name 1-year returns (%) 3-year returns (%) 5-year returns (%)
Franklin low duration (G) 8.807 8.695 9.051
Kotak Low Duration (G) 7.805 7.636 8.295
ICICI Pru Savings Fund(G) 8.474 7.785 8.245
Data Source: Morningstar

Low duration funds are ideally suited in the current scenario to give stability to the portfolio without too much credit risk.

4. Global funds for international diversification

An idea worth considering currently is the global funds. With the trade war in progress, one way to hedge your India portfolio will be through a global exposure to the developed markets. These are the most likely to receive risk-off flows when there is geopolitical and economic risk. Here are our top 3 performers.
Fund Name 1-year returns (%) 3-year returns (%) 5-year returns (%)
Franklin Feeder US (G) 7.039 16.932 13.061
ICICI Pru US Blue-chip (G) 7.403 12.067 10.942
DSP US Flexi Equity (G) 2.224 12.821 10.369
Data Source: Morningstar

Global funds give the best hedge against volatile domestic indices and a volatile currency.
