India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) took another step to celebrate its glorious past by unveiling - “The Ashok-Capital Icon” a Coffee Table Book at The Ashok in New Delhi today. Compiled as a chronicle, the book is released by Shripad Naik, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism and Culture who took special pride in unveiling the book.

On the occasion were present Parvez Dewan, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Dr. Sameer Sharma, Managing Director, ITDC. Prominent guests in attendance were dignitaries from the Ministry of Tourism, other Government departments and stakeholders from Travel & Hospitality sector.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sameer Sharma, Managing Director, ITDC said, “This is a proud moment for us to revisit all those cherished moments of our glorious history and share them with all of you as priceless treasures.”

The book is written by well-known and veteran Travel Writers Hugh and Colleen Gantzer. The book captures the rich and profound history of the  “The Ashok” from the time of its conceptualization in the 1955 to the present day. The hard bound compilation captures and at the same time refreshes the timeless moments from the independence era through 500 photographs illustrated in more than 275 pages. The book itself is a journey from the historic period to the present time creating various flashes from different leaps of time.

The compilation starts from the distant age of the massive supercontinent Gondwanaland, on the far shore of the prehistoric Tethys weaving through the Mughals and the British eras. The book then talks about the post independence period and the origin of The Ashok.  The authors have spent a very long period to encompass the vast history of this rich heritage and its each milestone in one chronicle -“The Ashok”. The Ashok is one such legend, its name synonymous with warm hospitality.

In the saga of Indian Hotels, in which the story of the Ashok holds the centre stage, has finally found expression in this extremely readable and enjoyable book through flashbacks. “The Ashok” is not only a sterile, glass-and-chrome, razor-edged robotic organization but it is an ecological community, in which humans, birds, plants and the environment interact in an evolving harmony which is almost magical in its cyclic complexity.
