European markets lifted by banking stocks; Asian equities end mixed

Central banks across the world look to ease monetary policy amid slowdown concerns. The European Central Bank took a similar step last week.

Bank stocks paced European shares on Thursday, after the US Federal Reserve cut interest rates setting a higher bar for further rate reductions.

The STOXX 600 index rose 0.2%, with Italian and Spanish markets outperforming.

Asian markets ended mixed. The Shanghai Composite gained 0.46% and the Nikkei 225 rose 0.38%. The Hang Seng lost 1.07%.

The Bank of Japan, while keeping monetary policy steady on Thursday, signalled the chance of expanding stimulus as early as its next policy meeting in October due to risks threatening the economy.

However, no change from the Bank of England is expected when it announces it interest rate decision later today.
