Are you spitting blood while brushing your teeth? Or are bad breath and red, swollen gums becoming natural for you? Pepsodent’s ‘Call The Expert’ - a nationwide oral health initiative reveals that a lot of Indians face gum problems. According to the survey, Andhra Pradesh has recorded the highest percentage of gum problems (37%) followed by Karnataka and West Bengal at 24% each.

Dr. P. Krishna Rao, R.K Dental Hospital, Hyderabad, explains, “In my routine dental practice, I get about 70-80 patients everyday, out of which around 40-45 patients complain of bleeding gums and periodental problems. The numbers have gone up even more in the past one year. I recommend brushing twice daily and using a toothpaste that contains Zinc Citrate and Triclosan. Also, visiting your dentist every three months is advisable.”

According to Pepsodent, one of India’s leading oral care brands, consumers tend to ignore gum bleeding as they are of the notion that it is because of brushing teeth too vigorously or eating something hard that has abraded their gum.

However, bleeding and inflamed gums are most often a sign of potential gum problems, leading to Gingivitis and Periodontitis, more popularly known as gum diseases. It is recommended to use Pepsodent G Expert, which treats gum bleeding and creates a gum shield that protects gums and prevents cavities.

Major consequences for Gingivitis and Periodontitis are bad breath, tartar and decay & bone loss. Gingivitis is a common problem, but easy to reverse by following a dental hygiene regimen. However, if not treated in time, it could advance into Periodontitis, a severe problem in which the ligaments and bones supporting the teeth are infected, leading to tissue destruction. Periodontitisrequires immediate attention of your dentist. If not addressed in time, it can lead to tooth loss.

So make sure you practice good dental habits, eat a balanced diet and use the right toothpaste with effective ingredients. Regular visits to dentists are also recommended.
