The BSE Sensex and Nifty will not be conducting any trading today on account of Gandhi Jayanti. Further, all wholesale commodity markets, including metals and bullions, as well as forex and commodity futures markets will remain closed today.
The nation celebrates the birth anniversary of its beloved leader, Mahatma Gandhi, today. This year marks the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, who led India's freedom struggle and continues to inspire generations.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, Gandhi incorporated a non-violent resistance, taking the forefront of India's freedom struggle movement against the colonial British rule.
Equity indices witnessed sharp fall on Tuesday amid heavy selling in banking stocks due to rising fears of their exposure to troubled real estate/housing finance companies. The Sensex ended at 38,305.41, down 362 points and Nifty50 index ended at 11,360, down 115 points or 1%.
Amongst the broader market indices, both BSE Midcap and BSE Smallcap ended lower by 1.5% and 1.6% respectively.
All the sectoral indices witnessed selling pressure led by Realty, Banks, IT and Metals which fell in the range of 1.6 to 3.9%.
