Sensex, Nifty trade lower; Media stocks outperform

Equity benchmark indices extended losses in the afternoon trade as selling pressure was witnessed in Reliance, TCS, Infosys and L&T. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 106 points at 40,229 and the Nifty50 index fell 39 points at 11,869.

The Nifty Auto stocks slipped after SIAM data for October 2019. Shares of TVS Motor, Hero MotoCorp and MRF fell over 2% in today’s trade.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index and BSE Small-Cap index was up 0.23% and 0.11% respectively.

The market breadth was negative on the NSE, with 800 shares rose and 933 shares fell. A total of 424 shares were unchanged.

The NSE's India VIX surged 4.57% to 16.58.

The Nifty Media index outperformed in today’s trade, up with ~3%. Zee stock surged 6% among top contributor to the index gain, followed by Dish TV, Zee Media, Sun TV and PVR.

Agro Phos India, Amrutanjan Health Care, Apollo Pipes, Avanti Feeds, Cupid, Deepak Nitrite, Fortis Healthcare, IPCA Laboratories, Jump Networks and Narayana Hrudayalaya hit a 52-week high on the NSE.

Overall, 21 shares were trading in green in Nifty50 index, while 29 were trading in the red.
