United India Insurance Company on Saturday said that general insurance claims arising out of the devastating floods in Uttarakhand are around Rs. 30 billion.

United India Insurance CMD Milind Kharat said that its company itself has an exposure of Rs. 5 billion in the state. The insurer has received 37 claims till date. However, surveyors have still not been able to reach damaged sites, Kharat further said.

The claims were mainly from hydel power projects, which suffered massive losses, he said.

Though only four claims were from these projects, there has been a significant loss to plant, machinery and buildings. Other claims pertained to property and vehicle damages.

Four public sector general insurers, United India Insurance, New India Assurance, Oriental Insurance and National Insurance, would meet in Dehradun next week to devise a strategy for early settlement of claims, Kharat said.
