Nifty settles above 10,700 mark; Infratel, Vedanta stocks gain

  • Equity benchmark indices ended higher on Friday, with the Nifty50 settled at 10,727, up at 55 points. The Sensex jumped 181 points at 35,695 led by HDFC, SBI, Reliance Industries, and Axis Bank.
  • The market breadth was narrow as, 868 shares have advanced, while 829 shares declined, and 364 shares remained unchanged. Except IT stocks, metals, energy and banks stocks ended higher.
  • China’s central bank acted to release cash into the economy to support growth, trimming the amount of cash lenders must hold as reserves by 1% point.

Nifty hovers around 10,700 mark; IT stocks under pressure

  • Equity benchmark indices is now off highs, and Sensex has slipped more than 176 points from the day’s highs, while the Nifty50 is trading below the 10,700-mark.
  • Infratel, Airtel, BPCL, Tata Motors, and SBI were the top gainers, while Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, TCS, Infosys, and IndusInd Bank were the top losers on the NSE.
  • The market breadth is narrow with 772 shares advancing, 892 shares declining, and 395 remaining unchanged.

Vista Pharma awaits USFDA nod for launch of gDofetilide; stock surges 4.5%

  • Shares of Vista Pharmaceuticals surged 4.5% in afternoon trade on the BSE on Friday.
  • The pharma company had filed an ANDA in September 2017 for Dofetilide (Brand: Tikosyn) in financial partnership with Biddle Sawyer, USA. Read more. 

Power Grid gains ~1% after board approves investment proposal

  • Shares of Power Grid Corporation of India rose 1% on Friday after its board approved a proposal for investments in two projects aggregating to Rs379.45cr.
  • Accordingly, the company’s board granted approval for the implementation of 500MVAr Thyristor Controlled Reactor at Kurukshetra 400kV bus at an estimated cost of Rs267.33cr with commissioning a schedule of 30 months from the date of investment approval, the company said in a press note to the exchanges on Friday. Tata Motors rises 3% on reports of robust JLR US sales

  • Shares of Tata Motors climbed 3% on Friday after media reports suggested that Jaguar Land Rover Limited (JLR) reported 24% growth in US sales for December.
  • As per media reports, total JLR US sales in December climbed to 14,079 units against 11,394 units in the same period a year ago. Further, the total land rover sales in the US have grown 33% at 10,617 units against 7,980 units in the same period a year ago. Read more.

  • Indian equity markets are witnessing a swift comeback with benchmark indices recovering sharply from the low point of the day.
  • The Nifty was trading 43 points higher at 10,715, while Bank Nifty was up 259 points at 27,219 led by a surge in PSU Bank stocks @1.18PM.
  • The Nifty has managed to claw back just above its 200-DEMA of 10,710, which it had breached in the previous trading session. Read more.

  • Shares of banking and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) extended gains by 2-1% in the afternoon session on Friday.

  • On a lacklustre day for the markets, the BSE Power index is trading flat at 1,946.62 in the afternoon session. The BSE Power index is currently trading lower at 1,946.48, down by 0.04%.
  • The index opened higher at 1,943 points as against its previous close of 1,947.27 points and hit a high and a low of 1,961.15 and 1,942.28 points, respectively. The sectoral breadth is currently negative, with 6 stocks advancing and 10 stocks declining. Read more.

Nestle drops 1% after SC revives class action against Co

  • Shares of Nestle India were trading down 1% on Friday on reports that the Supreme Court (SC) has revived the class action suit of the Central government against Nestle India in the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) with regards to the Maggi scandal.
  • As per media reports, the apex court lifted the stay on the proceedings of the case against Nestle, which seeks compensation for damages worth Rs640cr on charges of unfair trade practices, false labeling, and misleading advertisements with regards to the Maggi instant noodles brand. Read more

Jet Airways plans to secure debt using revenue from ticket sales: Media report

  • Shares of debt-ridden airline company Jet Airways dropped 3% on Friday after an Economic Times report suggested that the company is planning to utilize its revenue from ticket sales to secure its debt.

India Nikkei Services PMI falls to 53.2 in Dec; Business sentiment at three-month high

  • Despite falling to 53.2 in December, from 53.7 mid-quarter, the seasonally adjusted Nikkei India Services Business Activity Index pointed to an expansion in sector output that was among the strongest recorded in the past two years. The figure contributed to the highest quarterly average seen since Q4FY15-16.
  • Information and Communication remained the strongest performing category, posting the quickest increases in both new business and activity. Real Estate and Business Services was the only segment to record contractions. Read more

Va Tech Wabag soars ~4.5% after Norges Bank acquires stake

  • Shares of VaTech Wabag were in the green on Friday morning. Shares soared 4.52%, after Norges Bank acquired 3.31 lakh shares or 0.61% equity at Rs259.53 each.
  • Norges Bank purchased 3.31 lakh shares of the company at Rs259.3 per share, while Goldman Sachs India Fund sold 8,67,665 shares at Rs270.1 per share. Read more.

G M Breweries stock tumbles after PAT declines in Q3

NHPC completes shutdown of Parbati-III power station

  • NHPC, in its filing to the exchanges informed that the company has completed the shutdown of its Parbati-111 (520 MW) Power Station in Himachal Pradesh.
  • "The shutdown will cause tentative loss of 35.1MUs in the production of electricity and 6.5% in PAF," the company said in a press note on Thursday after market hours to the exchanges. Read more.

RCom files contempt plea against DoT in SC: Media reports

  • Reliance Communication (RCom), a company led by Anil Ambani, filed a contempt of court plea against the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in the Supreme Court, media reports said.
  • The company claimed that DoT failed to furnish a no-objection certificate clearing RCom’s spectrum deal with Reliance Industries’ Reliance Jio Infocomm even after the court had directed it to do so, reports said. Read more.

In the derivative market, FIIs sold 477cr of Index futures and bought 1701cr worth of Index options. In the Stock futures segment, FIIs sold 913cr worth of stock futures and bought 140cr stock options.

FII View: FIIs created bearish positions in the derivative segment in yesterday’s trading session, which is deduced by the fact that they created 6085 net short contracts in Index Futures while simultaneously creating 19134 long contracts in Index Put Options.
