International cardiologists at the clinic talked about a novel procedure for treating Cardioembolic Stroke – a condition in which the blood clot arises in the chambers of the heart.

Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (FEHI), a fully dedicated cardiac care facility in India organised an Interactive Clinic on Cardiovascular Interventions and Emergencies at Hotel Eros, Nehru Place today.

More than 400 renowned cardiologists of national and international repute participated in the two day clinic, along with the doctors from related fields. The sessions at this unique interactive clinic focused on the latest developments in cardiology and cutting edge cardiac practice being followed in various parts of the world.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Atul Mathur, Director Interventional Cardiology, FEHI said, “Cardiologists in India are ready to embark upon a journey to the next dimension where open chest heart surgeries will slowly get replaced by non surgical therapies to replace and repair valves, prevent brain strokes by plugging the heart or unblocking choked brain arteries, and deploy stents that vanish in time. We showcase these advances in a major conglomeration of specialists from India and abroad.”

International cardiologists at the clinic talked about a novel procedure for treating Cardioembolic Stroke – a condition in which the blood clot arises in the chambers of the heart. This problem is difficult to treat especially among patients who cannot take blood thinners that prevent the clots from going to the brain from the heart. It is now possible to prevent the occurrence of Cardioembolic Strokes in a very effective manner through the Watchman Device. Once inserted in the body, the Watchman Device blocks the clot and further prevents its formation in the heart.

The panel also shed light on the Transcutaneous Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) – a revolutionary procedure to treat Severe Aortic Stenosis, a condition that narrows the aortic valve orifice thus, restricting the flow of blood from the heart to the body. The conventional procedure followed to treat the disorder is by conducting an open-heart valve replacement surgery, which often proves risky in case of elderly patients. On the other hand in TAVI, artificial valves are implanted using plastic catheters in the heart, and safety is ensured. TAVI is a boon for the poor cardiac patients who may not afford costly open-heart surgical procedures, and has gained world-wide acceptance.

Further educating the audience on the mitral valve repair procedures, interventional cardiologists spoke about how the Mitra Clip System has received global recognition and become a path-breaking procedure performed in cath-labs. Since, this is a less-invasive procedure; it reduces the symptoms of heart failure and also improves the quality of life of the patients significantly.

Through this clinic FEHI has exemplified its continuous efforts to share the latest in healthcare with the medical fraternity at large. Eminent doctors also presented case-studies and discussed key topics such as non-invasive imaging, advances in interventional cardiology, next-generation robotic surgery, and future of coronary interventions etc.
