On Tuesday, May 21, Indian stock market benchmarks Sensex and Nifty 50 ended the day on a mixed note after a volatile trading session marked by cautious trading. Nifty managed to hold above the 22,500 mark despite the overall cautious sentiment.

At the close, the Sensex was down 52.63 points or 0.07%, finishing at 73,953.31. Nifty, on the other hand, was up 27 points or 0.12%, closing at 22,529. The market saw 1,411 shares advancing, while 2,082 shares declined, and 128 shares remained unchanged.

Indian indices opened slightly lower influenced by mixed global cues, with Nifty slipping below 22,500 in the first half of the session. In the second half, the market recovered its losses, supported by buying in the metal, power, oil & gas, and PSU Banks sectors.

Top Nifty losers included Nestle, Hero MotoCorp, ICICI Bank, TCS, and Maruti Suzuki. Top Nifty gainers were Hindalco Industries, Coal India, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, and Adani Ports. The metal index saw a significant increase, rising by 4%. The power index gained 2%, and the PSU Bank index rose by 1.5%. Conversely, the FMCG index was down by 0.5%. The BSE midcap index increased by 0.3%, while the smallcap index decreased by 0.2%.
