Indian Automakers Navigate Growth in February Sales Amidst Challenges

1 Mar 2024 , 10:42 AM

Indian automakers reported year-on-year growth in wholesale numbers for February 2022, driven by eased COVID-19 restrictions and increased demand for electric vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki India, the market leader, experienced a marginal decline in total wholesales, reaching 164,056 units compared to 164,469 units in the same month last year.

Maruti Suzuki attributed the drop to the shortage of electronic components affecting domestic market vehicle production, leading to an 8.46% decrease in domestic sales (140,035 units) but a more than two-fold increase in exports (24,021 units).

Tata Motors witnessed a 27% rise in total domestic sales, reaching 73,875 units, with passenger vehicle sales surging by 47% (39,981 units) and commercial vehicle sales climbing by 9% (33,894 units).

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) recorded an 89% increase in total sales (54,455 units) compared to February 2021, driven by an 80% YoY rise in passenger vehicle sales (27,663 units) and a doubling of commercial vehicle sales (23,978 units).

Hyundai Motor India experienced a 14% decline in total sales (53,159 units) with domestic sales dropping by 14.6% (44,050 units).

Skoda Auto India saw a significant increase in sales to 4,503 units, over five times higher than the same month last year, attributed to the success of the mid-sized SUV Kushaq.

Nissan India reported a 57% growth in total wholesales (6,662 vehicles), with 2,456 units sold domestically and 4,206 units exported.

MG Motor India registered a 5% growth in retail sales, reaching 4,528 units in February 2022, citing robust demand and promising growth momentum despite supply chain constraints.
