Axis Bank is India’s third-largest private sector bank by balance sheet size, with a strong nationwide and growing international presence across key financial segments. Its large customer base, diversified loan book and active role in digital payments make it a systemically important player in India’s banking and financial services landscape.
Axis Bank is a new-generation private sector bank that began operations in 1994 and today offers a full range of retail, SME, corporate and wholesale banking services. The bank operates through a strong group platform, including subsidiaries in investment banking, broking, asset management, and digital payments.
Founding & evolution
Digital banking & fintech integration: Axis Bank offers a leading mobile and internet banking platform, holds a significant share in UPI payer transactions and credit cards, and leverages its Freecharge subsidiary to deepen digital payments and embedded finance propositions.
Axis Bank has embedded ESG as a key pillar in its long-term strategy, and the Board-Level ESG Committee ensures oversight of climate, environmental and social priorities. The bank has agreed to scale sustainable and positive impact financing, reduce exposure from carbon-intensive sectors and incorporate ESG criteria into its lending decisions. It is also conducting focused CSR and climate action, including the plan to plant 8 million trees by 2030, of which roughly 3.27 million had been planted by March 2025.
