INDUSTRY STRUCTURE AND DEVELOPMENTS:
Indias investment industry remained resilient during FY 2025-26, supported by strong economic growth, increasing domestic investor participation, expanding capital markets, and continued regulatory reforms. Despite global uncertainties, India continued to be among the worlds fastest-growing major economies, supported by robust macroeconomic fundamentals.
The financial services sector witnessed continued growth, driven by digitalisation, greater financial inclusion, and wider adoption of technology-enabled investment platforms. Increasing investor awareness and the shift of household savings towards financial assets contributed to sustained growth in the capital markets. The number of demat accounts exceeded 21.6 crore, while mutual fund participation continued to expand across the country.
The regulatory landscape also evolved with continued initiatives by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to strengthen market transparency, investor protection, and corporate governance. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) maintained a balanced policy approach to support financial stability and economic growth.
Looking ahead, the long-term outlook for the investment industry remains positive, supported by favourable demographics, increasing financialisation of savings, digital innovation, and continued policy support. However, global economic conditions, market volatility, interest rate movements, and geopolitical developments continue to pose challenges that require prudent investment and risk management practices.
INDIAN ECONOMY:
India continued to be one of the fastest-growing major economies, driven by strong domestic demand, structural reforms and supportive policies. In recent years, the countrys rapid economic expansion enabled it to surpass the UK, making it the worlds fifth-largest economy. However, in FY2025, global uncertainties, rising geopolitical tensions and persistent inflationary pressures contributed to a slowdown in overall economic growth. According to the second advance estimates from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI), Indias economy grew by 6.5% y-o-y in FY2025, compared to 9.2% in the previous year. Inflationary pressures remained a key concern in FY2025, driven by global supply chain disruptions and commodity price volatility. In response, the RBIs Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) reduced the repo rate by 25 basis points in two successive cuts, bringing it down to 6% as of April 2025, while continuing with an accommodative stance. Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is expected to average 4.9% in FY2025, down from 5.4% in the previous year, and is projected to ease further to 4.0% in FY2026.
