Govt announces probe into Wal-Mart lobbying report


The government has reportedly announced an inquiry into lobbying practices by Wal-Mart Stores Inc.


Wal-Mart disclosed in a report to the U.S. Senate that it had paid $25mn over four years to lobby American lawmakers to help gain access to overseas markets, including India.


Government officials said that privately there is nothing to investigate since Wal-Mart's lobbying activities in the United States were not illegal, according to reports.


While Wal-Mart has reported that allegations it had lobbied in India were "entirely false".


12-12-12 sees online shopping boom in India


The first of its kind 24 hour online shopping festival organized by Google India on 12-12-12, has been a huge success with unprecedented number of users surfing online to find the best deals. The festival which saw participation from over 50 leading e-commerce companies in India was aimed at encouraging shoppers to adopt online shopping with a focus to reach out to first time online buyers.

Speaking about the response till 4:00pm today, Rajan Anandan, VP & Managing Director, Google India said, “This is by far the biggest online shopping event that India has witnessed in the history of eCommerce in the country. All our partners have seen massive increase in online traffic and some of them had already sold out their stocks by 3:00pm. The response has been phenomenal and beyond our expectations and we hope that this initiative will further fuel the growth of online shopping in India.”

Reasons for allowing FDI in retail Sector


Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) complements and supplements domestic investment. Domestic companies are benefited through FDI, by way of enhanced access to supplementary capital and state-of-the-art technologies; exposure to global managerial practices and opportunities of integration into global markets.


Government had instituted a study, on the subject of “Impact of Organized Retailing on the Unorganized Sector”, through the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), which was submitted to Government in 2008. The ICRIER study indicated significant benefits for various stakeholders, such as consumers, farmers and manufacturers, arising from the growth of organized retail.


Based upon the study, as well as the experience of other countries, it is the Government’s assessment that implementation of the policy permitting FDI, up to 51%, in multi-brand retail trading, is likely to facilitate greater FDI inflows into front and back-end infrastructure; technologies and efficiencies to unlock the potential of the agricultural value chain; additional and quality employment; and global best practices. This, in turn, is expected to benefit consumers and farmers in the long run, in terms of quality and price. Read more…


IIFL Institutional Equities recommends 'Add' on Titan


IIFL Institutional Equities, a part of the IIFL Group, one of the leading players in the Indian financial services space, recommends “Add” Titan.


According to IIFL Institutional Equities report, Titan management highlighted that jewellery demand was healthy in the festive season (3QFY13). However, operating performance in the watch segment was muted. We expect Titan’s 3Q revenue to grow 21% YoY, led by strong growth in the jewellery segment.


Multiple tailwinds (50% space addition in jewellery segment, pick-up in gold demand, direct gold import and higher studded jewellery share) should drive healthy 24% EPS Cagr over FY12-15ii. However, RBI’s hawkish stance would weigh on gold demand and remains a concern. Reiterate ADD, the brokerage added.

Promart opens store at Dwarka with Neha Dhupia
