Founding & Evolution

  • Founded: Set up on 1 November 1975
  • Listed year: Launched its IPO on 18 October 2010; got listed on both the BSE and NSE on 4 November 2010.

  • Strategic Acquisitions & Alliances: Acquisition of coking coal assets in the Far East region of Russia. CIL also owns a subsidiary called Coal India Africana Limitada (CIAL). In 2009, it secured a prospecting licence to explore coal blocks in Mozambique’s Tete Province.

Coal India is a central public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Coal. The company is headquartered in Kolkata.

  • Branches/sites: CIL operates through ten wholly owned subsidiaries. Together, they manage 310 mines across eight Indian states. These mines include opencast, underground, and mixed formats.
  • Employees: It is also one of India’s biggest employers, with about 2,72,000 employees. This makes it the 9th largest employer in the country.
  • International operations: Development and management of coal and mineral assets abroad in countries like the USA, Russia and Australia.
  • Customer base: Industrial clients mainly in the power generation sector. It also serves other sectors like steel and railways.

Business Segments

Coal India deals mainly in coal and coal-based products, including:

  • Coking Coal: High in carbon. Used in steelmaking to produce coke.
  • Semi-Coking Coal: Lower carbon than coking coal but higher than non-coking. Used in coke production and other industries.
  • Non-Coking Coal: Does not have coking properties. Used in thermal power plants, cement plants, and general industries.
  • Washed Coal: Coal cleaned through a beneficiation process. It has lower ash and a higher value.
  • Middlings: A by-product from the coal washing process. It is a fraction separated from raw coal.
  • Rejects: Another by-product of beneficiation. These are portions removed from clean coal and middlings.
  • Coke: A key fuel for steelmaking. CIL produces smokeless, eco-friendly LTC Coke through low-temperature carbonisation.
  • Other Coal-Based Products: Includes coal tar, hard coke, and several speciality coal products.
