Qualcomm and Jio join forces: Sub-$99 5G phone coming soon

27 Feb 2024 , 04:24 PM

In the Indian market, US-based chipmaker Qualcomm is becoming more assertive. By the end of this year, it hopes to release an entry-level 5G smartphone that will cost less than $99 thanks to the introduction of a new chipset.

In India, the newest chipset may persuade 2G customers to migrate to a smartphone-enabled 5G environment, according to a senior Qualcomm executive.

In order to build and release the phone, Qualcomm is also collaborating with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Reliance Jio, the leading cellular provider in India.

Executives from Qualcomm stated that the gigabit 5G smartphone will work with Jio’s current 5G standalone architecture.

A specialised, low-cost processor with SA-2Rx capability will power the gigabit 5G smartphone, enabling gigabit speeds on a 5G network.

‘With the new chipset, we hope to provide customers searching for reasonably priced smartphones with a comprehensive 5G experience. The item draws inspiration from India. We’re paying close attention to the 4G–5G transition. Thus, our main concern is how to ensure that the transition is as seamless as possible and that our products are truly optimised for telcos, handset developers, and end users ‘SVP and General Manager of Qualcomm’s Handsets, Chris Patrick, spoke with Moneycontrol in Barcelona on the fringes of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024.

This Spanish city will host the MWC 2024 from February 26 to 29.
