On Thursday, the government announced that it had exempted loose or open clothing and hosiery from six declarations, including “best before use” and “consumer care address.”
Following several representations, the consumer affairs ministry amended the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011 to reflect this, according to a statement.
Only four essential pieces of consumer-relevant information must now be provided, it was added.
They feature the maximum selling price, sizes with easily recognizable indicators, and information in metric units of centimetres and meters, as well as the email address and phone number for customer service.
According to the statement, names and addresses of the producer, marketer, brand owner, and importer must also be provided, along with the “country of origin or manufacture” in the case of imported products.
The laws have been changed to enhance ease of doing business and lessen the burden of compliance on sectors without compromising consumer interests, it was said.
