Coal Ministry said in its statement that India’s domestic coal production increased 7.10% year on year in May. Coal production has reached 76.26 million tonnes (MT) in May 2023, as compared to 71.21 MT in the same month previous year.
The cumulative production in 2MFY24 (YTD) increased to 149.41 MT as compared to 138.41 MT in the previous corresponding period.
In the previous month, Coal India Limited alone reported production of 59.94 MT of coal, up by 9.54% against 54.72 MT in May 2022.
With improved first-mile connectivity infrastructure, coal dispatch increased 5.70% last month to 82.22 MT from 77.79 MT in May 2022. The transportation of coal from pitheads to dispatch points is referred to as first-mile connectivity.
The total coal dispatch in April-May FY24 was 162.44 MT, up from 149.76 MT the previous year.
This increase in offtake has led to a comfortable coal stock position, ensuring a reliable and ample supply of coal lying at pithead coal stock at CIL, SCCL, stock at TPP(DCB), and so on, according to the ministry.
