Hindalco, Phinergy sign MOU for production of aluminum plates for aluminum air batteries

18 Jul 2022 , 03:33 PM

The metal-air battery pioneer Phinergy in Israel and Hindalco of the Aditya Birla Group have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop and test the production of aluminium plates for aluminium-air batteries in India.

The agreement also includes IOC Phinergy, a joint venture between Phinergy and Indian Oil Corporation.

When aluminium combines with oxygen in the surrounding air to form aluminium hydroxide, energy is released in an aluminum-air battery. Such a battery is perfect for electric vehicles because of its low weight and great energy density, the business claimed in a news release.

The company claimed that because these batteries can be easily "refuelled," there is no need for pricey statewide charging networks.

Aluminum can be recovered by recycling the aluminium hydroxide that the battery produces. Recycling of this aluminium is covered by the three firms' memorandum of understanding.

Hindalco managing director Satish Pai said in a statement that "climate action is vital to our company and our relationship with Phinergy and IOP is a key step towards decarbonising mobility."

According to him, "India has a wealth of aluminium resources, and this technology can assist improve the country's energy and resource security."

By revenue, Hindalco is the largest aluminium producer in the world and one of the biggest producers of primary aluminium in Asia.
