Khagorijan oil field begins production after 15 years

22 Aug 2022 , 12:51 PM

On Saturday, the Khagorijan oil field held by the government-controlled Oil India Limited (OIL) in Dibrugarh, eastern Assam, began production after nearly 15 years.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, was present at the ceremony marking the restart of OIL's Khagorijan oil field in Rohmoria, whose operations had been halted since November 2007 due to logistical and environmental concerns.

Oil was found in the area in November 1998, and according to the Chief Minister, four wells were sunk. Production began in December 2004, and one of those wells, Khagorijan, is located 1.8 kilometers from the Brahmaputra.

Numerous local organizations in the Khagorijan region impeded OIL's operations in that region as a result of the Brahmaputra river's significant erosion. In November 2007, the OIL halted all of its operations as a result of a protracted blockade by local organizations.

The Chief Minister claimed that the Brahmaputra River's erosion at Rohmoria had had a significant negative impact on the local population and caused widespread destruction.

Numerous attempts to find a long-lasting and permanent solution to the issue have been made throughout the years, but for a variety of reasons, they have not been successful, according to Sarma.

The Chief Minister said that the state government would approve an additional fund of Rs16.13 crore for the construction of the remaining stretch of the embankment, claiming that so far 80% of the work of the embankment for the protection of Rohmoria has been finished.

The Chief Minister requested that the Water Resources department use cutting-edge technology to achieve high-quality work.

Restoration of flood damages caused by the Brahmaputra River from Liting Gaon to Rohmoria Gaon and at Rohmoria from the Higher Secondary School to Borotichuk are among the projects.
