The Supreme Court issues a warning to Patanjali Ayurveda on false medical claims and threatens harsh sanctions

22 Nov 2023 , 02:35 PM

The Patanjali Ayurveda has received a strong warning from the Supreme Court for deceptive advertising and false claims that criticize contemporary medications and immunizations.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) filed a petition, and the court ordered Patanjali to stop making any false claims. If Patanjali doesn’t comply, there would be severe consequences.

Judges Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Prashant Kumar Mishra’s bench emphasized that the matter was too complex to be boiled down to a discussion between contemporary medicine/allopathy and Ayurvedic products.

‘Patanjali Ayurved needs to immediately stop running any deceptive or false advertisements. This Court will consider fines of up to Rs 1 crore for any product for which a false representation is made that it will cure a certain condition ‘Justice Amanullah stated that such transgressions will be taken very seriously by this Court.

Apart from the advertising tactics of Patanjali, the Supreme Court has encouraged the Union to submit a proposal that addresses deceptive medical ads on a broader scale. The action was taken in response to the IMA’s worries about Patanjali’s campaigns, which appeared to disparage modern medicine and immunization initiatives.

The Supreme Court’s involvement highlights the seriousness of the situation and the requirement for ethical advertising in the healthcare industry. The result of this legal development may have an impact on Patanjali as well as the medical advertising industry in general in India, necessitating a review of rules and guidelines to guarantee truthful and open communication in the medical field
