Amazon Under Scrutiny for "Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad" Candy

20 Jan 2024 , 10:03 AM

Amazon has received a notice from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) for selling candies under the alias ‘Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad.’ According to an official release, the Consumer Protection Act of 2019 requires Amazon to respond to the CCPA’s warning within seven days of it being sent. If they don’t, legal action will be taken against them.

The CCPA has ‘initiated action against Amazon Seller Services Pvt Ltd, concerning the sale of sweets on www.amazon.in under the name ‘Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad,” under the direction of Chief Commissioner Rohit Kumar Singh.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) issued a representation that sparked the lawsuit, claiming that Amazon is selling sweets under the false name ‘Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad’ and is involved in misleading commercial practices.

The CCPA has noticed that a variety of food items and sweets are being sold on the Amazon e-commerce platform (www.amazon.in) with the claim that they are from ‘Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad’.

Allowing food goods to be sold online under false pretences deceives customers about the true nature of the product.

‘Such practice falsely influences consumers to make purchase decisions they might not have otherwise taken, had the accurate attributes of the product been mentioned,’ a company statement stated.

It should be noted that no e-commerce organization may adopt any unfair trade practices, whether in the course of conducting business on its platform or otherwise, as per Rule 4(3) of the Consumer Protection (e-commerce) Rules, 2020.
