APM Terminals Pipavav aims at inclusive development of ecosystem

Pipavav, India: APM Terminals Pipavav, the first port to be connected to the DFC, is aiming at inclusive development of ecosystem of local community, employees, suppliers and customers. It has steered the local youth to entrepreneurship and has created ample opportunities of employment through up-skilling and improving the livelihoods of surrounding villagers. The Company has set-up Skill and Entrepreneurship Development Institute (SEDI) under the project ‘Saksham’ with an objective of providing professional skills to youth to enable them for employment.
In last five years, the Company has trained around 1,500 youth across 200 villages, out of which around 1,100 have got employment or have created their own establishments to generate earnings on a regular basis. Close to 30% of these youth are women and are suitably employed.
Commenting on Company’s initiatives, Mr. Jakob Friis Sørensen, MD, APM Terminals Pipavav said, “The local people are an integral part of our system and we are proud to not only support their livelihoods, but also partner with them through providing suitable employment opportunities. Almost 85% of our employees are of local origin who have been hired following our stringent & transparent HR process.”
Suppliers are part of company’s inclusive growth trajectory. APM Terminals Pipavav follows stringent guidelines established by AP Moller Maersk regarding safety, vendor on-boarding, employee recruitment, customer service and community services that leads to improvement in livelihoods. APM Terminals Pipavav follows ‘Supplier Code of Conduct’ and believes in giving fair and transparent opportunities to all the local vendors/ Suppliers. The vendor selection process is based on the financial stability, project deliverables, work assessment, relevant experience, technical requirements as appropriate. Emphasizing on Company’s global practices for on-boarding of suppliers, Mr. Sørensen said, “The Supplier Code of Conduct ensures that we follow the fair and transparent process to engage with the vendors. We have a clear tendering process and provide online portal to suppliers for participation in new projects or renew existing projects.”
