A spate of legislative reforms is expected to be discussed during the GST council meeting in Chandigarh on June 28 and 29.
Compliance difficulties for e-commerce suppliers are expected to be alleviated, according to sources familiar with the developments. The council might also give the federal government and states the authority to issue show-cause warnings to stop leaks.
The administration, according to sources, will deliver a full report on the National Anti-Profiteering Authority (NAA) and the cases that are now pending.
The government is also expected to notify the council that the NAA has engaged a solicitor general and a team of attorneys to defend its position in state high courts and to file appeals in the Supreme Court in cases where state high courts have ruled against it.
The government is expected to combine NAA with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) before the end of the year, according to CNBC-TV18. “The competition watchdog is expected to take up all pending anti-profiteering authority charges following the merger,” the sources added.
“There were about 400 instances outstanding with the NAA as of May,” the sources claimed, “and the authority has been urged to wind up as many cases as possible on an expedient basis.”
