According to a Ministry of Finance statement, the import duty for parts used in the production of mobile phones has been lowered by the Centre from 15% to 10%.
According to the statement, import duties have been lowered by 5 to 10% on parts for mobile phones, including back covers, battery covers, GSM antennas, primary camera lenses, and other mechanical plastic and metal items.
Additionally, import duties on the inputs needed to make these components have been eliminated, said the notification.
In the words of Rajat Mohan, a director at tax consulting firm MOORE Singhi, ‘duty cuts on import of mobile phone parts would help big global manufacturers to set up large scale mobile assembly lines in India, and substantially increase exports of mobile phones,’ as reported by Reuters.
The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) said in a statement that the action will increase the competitiveness of India’s mobile phone manufacturing industry.
