eBay India (www.eBay.in), India’s leading eCommerce marketplace, released the Quarterly Battle of the Gadget Rankings for the most popular gadget models & brands based on an analysis of all gadget transactions on eBay India from July 1, 2012 to September 30, 2012. The research report showcases interesting trends of India’s Top Gadget Cities, Models & Brands across 5 popular gadget categories of Mobile Phones, Laptops, Tablets, Digital Cameras, & Televisions. Tablets, which earlier was part of the Laptops Category has been separated and highlighted as a new significant electronics category.
The most popular gadget brand has been taken over by Sony with 20% of market share across the gadget categories of Mobile Phones, Laptops, Tablets, Digital Cameras, & Televisions on eBay India. The most popular brands are Sony in the Mobile Phones category, Dell in the Laptop category, iBerry in the Tablets category, Nikon & Canon in the Digital Camera category & Samsung in the TV Category. On an average day on eBay India, a mobile handset sells every 2 minutes, a laptop sells every 23 minutes, a tablet sells every 11 minutes, a digital camera sells every 20 minutes & a TV sells every 43 minutes on eBay India.

Gadgets are also a very popular purchase for non metro consumers as eCommerce helps bridge distribution gaps in their city. Purchases from non metros have gone up by 27% in this quarter.”
Staying Connected: Top Mobile Brands & Model Rankings
Overall: Sony has emerged as the leader amongst popular brands in Mobile Phone category with 25% market share of all mobile phone brands purchased on eBay India. Sony Xperia Arc S is the most purchased mobile phone model. The Capital City of Delhi continues to buy the most Mobile Phones in the third quarter as well.
Smart Phones: Sony has retained its number one position in the Smart Phones category with 43% market share amongst the popular Smart Phone brands with Sony Xperia Arc S being the most popular Smart Phone. Samsung, Blackberry and HTC are on the second, third and fourth position respectively. Sony, Samsung, Blackberry and Apple together have captured 87% of market share amongst transaction in this category. Bengaluru consumed most Smart Phones in the last quarter with cities like Ludhiana and Coimbatore being featured amongst top 10 Smart Phone cities.
Dual SIM Phones: Samsung has topped the Dual SIM Phone ranking, while Nokia has slipped to number two. Samsung Galaxy Y Duos S6102 has again being ranked as the most purchased Dual SIM phone model. Delhi ranks first in consuming the most Dual SIM phones on eBay India followed by Kolkata and Chennai.
Value Phones: Nokia retained its lead position amongst Value Phone brands this quarter. However Samsung Wave Y S5380 stood as the most purchased model in the category. Delhi consumed the most Value Phones, followed by Chennai and Bengaluru.
Portable Workspace: Top Laptop Brands & Model Rankings
Overall: Dell has overtaken Apple in its number one position followed by Sony and Lenovo in the top Laptop brands list. Chennai bought the most laptops in India followed by Delhi and Bengaluru.
Regular Laptops: Dell retains its top position in Regular Laptops followed by HP and Sony. Dell Inspiron N4050 has been popular in the Regular Laptops segment followed by HP Pavilion G4 1025TX. Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru are leading when it comes to Regular Laptops consumption, whereas cities such as Rajkot and Coimbatore also feature amongst the top 10 cities. An interesting trend to note is that the top 10 cities consume more than 50% regular laptops purchased on eBay India.
Netbooks: Acer retained its first position followed by Asus and HP. Acer Aspire One D270 tops Netbook consumption on eBay India followed by ASUS Eee PC 1015CX in the third quarter. Chennai is the top city for Netbooks followed by Delhi and Bengaluru. A key trend to note here is that more than 65% of transactions for Netbooks are from non-metros
Tab it Away: Top Tablet & Model Rankings
Overall: iberry is the top tablet brand followed by BSNL and Apple. In the top Tablet model, iberry Auxus AX03G is in the first position with followed by BSNL Penta. Bengaluru leads the cities for Tablets purchased closely followed by Chennai & Delhi. 69 % of Tablet transactions are by non-metro consumers.
Snapshots: Top Camera Brands & Model Rankings
Overall: Nikon & Canon jointly top overall Digital Cameras Category with each holding 19% market share of all transactions for Digital Cameras; followed by Sony in the third position. Canon EOS 550D is the most purchased Digital Camera Model. Bengaluru followed by Chennai and Delhi were the top three cities respectively, indulging in Digital Cameras.
Compact Cameras: Sony overtook Canon in Compact Digital Camera segment with 31% market share and Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LS5 is also the most purchased Compact Digital Camera. Bengaluru bought the most Compact Cameras followed by Chennai and Delhi.
Long Zoom Cameras: Nikon holds the top position in Long Zoom Digital Cameras with 38% market share followed by Sony and Canon. Nikon COOLPIX L-810 is the most purchased Long Zoom Camera. Bengaluru bought the most Long Zoom cameras followed by Chennai and Delhi. Coimbatore, a non metro featured in the Top Ten Long Zoom Camera cities.
Digital SLR Cameras: Canon rules in the Digital SLR segment with 57% market share, followed by Nikon with a 39 % market share. Canon EOS 550D continued to be the most purchased model. Bengaluru also took up professional photography in a big way and bought the most Digital SLR Cameras, followed by Chennai and Delhi.
Tele-Mania: Top TV Brand & Model Rankings
Overall: Top brand position in TVs has been retained by Samsung in the third quarter with more than 68 % market share followed by Sony. Bengaluru followed by Chennai and Hyderabad are the top 3 TV cities. 32" size TVs have been most purchased in the quarter followed by 40".
LCD TVs: Toshiba leads the LCD segment at number one; followed by Sony and Samsung. The top 3 brands make 75 % of market share. Bengaluru tops the LCD TV segment followed by Delhi and Chennai. Toshiba REGZA 32HV10 leads LCD TV segment followed by Sony BRAVIA KLV32BX350.
LED TVs: Samsung is the Top Brand amongst LED TVs with 83% market share and alongwith Sony together dominates the LED market with 13% market share. Samsung 40EH5000 was the most preferred buy in the quarter. Bengaluru is the Top LED TVs city in the quarter followed by Chennai and Delhi.
