As part of its Rs 2,200 crore development strategy, Jindal Group stated on Tuesday that it will be commissioning a cement grinding unit in Odisha that would produce 1.5 million tonnes of cement annually (MnTPA).
The grinding unit uses slag to make cement and is built with low-carbon technologies. The neighbouring steel plant of Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) in Angul would supply slag to the facility.
Slag is a by-product of steel production using the blast furnace method.
The group said in a statement that its subsidiary Jindal Panther Cement (JPC) has strengthened its commitment to producing low-carbon cement by commissioning the first cement grinding plant with a capacity of 1.5 MTPA. About one million tonnes of blast furnace slag will be used by the operation.
With an expenditure of Rs 2,160 crore, JPC intends to increase its production capacity at both Angul and Raigarh to 7 MnTPA from 1 MnTPA now.
“The commissioning of our Angul grinding unit represents a significant step in our journey towards a sustainable future,” stated Rohit Vohra, CEO of JPC to ET. With our dedication to green cement, we hope to serve the expanding central and eastern regions of India.”
