Smartphone sales in India decrease y-o-y by 12%

10 Nov 2022 , 03:16 PM

According to a survey by Cybermedia Research, smartphone sales in India decreased 12% year over year but increased 16% quarter over quarter as a result of strong demand for 5G devices and holiday season sales (CMR).

This quarter, the top three players were Xiaomi, Samsung, and Realme, with shipments falling for all five of the top players.

Demand for 5G smartphones grew as a result of the most recent 5G auctions and the subsequent deployment of 5G networks by Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, with the segment expanding at a 30% year-over-year rate in the months of July and August. Additionally, the research company noticed a significant increase in the shipment of high-end cellphones during the quarter.

In contrast, the inexpensive smartphone segment (under Rs7,000) had a dramatic 57% year-over-year decline in shipment volume. The value-for-money segment (Rs7000—Rs25,000) saw high customer demand, according to CMR, and accounted for 79% of smartphone shipments.

While smartphones priced between Rs50,000 and Rs1,00,000 experienced a 39% year-over-year growth in the third quarter, the premium sector (Rs25,000 to Rs50,000) only experienced modest growth of 9%.

Due to the momentum from the holiday season, CMR stated that it anticipates high smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2022. However, it anticipates that the spectre of unfavourable macroeconomic conditions would endure. The research company predicts that yearly shipments would be in the range of 160-165 million units, which is roughly 10-15 million fewer than the previous prediction.

Xiaomi maintained its leadership position in the industry with a 22% market share, despite a 17% year-over-year fall in shipment volume. Shipments under its sub-brand Poco fell by 38% year over year in the prior quarter. The most popular models were the Redmi 9A Sport, Redmi 10 (2022), and Redmi 10A.

Despite seeing a 15% year-over-year decline in its shipment volume, Samsung maintained a 20% market share, according to the research company. According to CMR, the company's concentration on the affordable 5G smartphone market helped it improve its market share, with its 5G smartphone shipments showing a noteworthy 88% year-over-year rise.

Apple gained 4% of the market in the premium class, which led to an 8% increase in shipments. The majority of the company's third-quarter shipments were made up of the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14 series. According to CMR, 76% of Apple's exports fell between Rs50,000 and Rs1,000,000 in price.

Shipments for the Transsion Group, which houses brands including Infinix, Itel, and Tecno, are down 24% year over year. On the other side, OnePlus reported a 30% increase in shipments year over year, with the OnePlus Nord series accounting for 79% of the business's shipments.
